1979 115 hp jumps when trying to put in reverse

I tried to adjust the cable but the cable end is back all the way to the block but it clunks badly when shifting into reverse. I took the lower unit completly apart today to give it a good visual. The reverse dogs are a little rough but no worse than the forward ones. On my old merc. I had problems with the same thing that was always fixed by replacing the pin that rode on the shifting cam. But here I really don't know what to look for.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

While you have the gearcase off, check the shift shaft height. That's where most problems begin.

Adjust it to spec's. The shift rod screws into the L/U. In nuetral, it needs to be at a certain height. OMC has a tool for this and it is difficult to adjust without it. You can perceivably adjust it wth a good yard stick, 90* angle and a 1/4" bolt.

The measurement must be from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the top shift rod hole. It can be done easily with a simple tape rule.

1979 thru 1981 V/4 models = (L) 21-27/32" - - (XL) 26-27/32" Have shift rod in neutral.

When time permits, visit my store (copy/paste) at: stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store

Agreed... but even with a tape measure, I'd use a 90* angle
