1979 115 Johnson starter problem

When starting, the starter works, but there is a loud whining noise until the motor actually cranks. It sounds like when you try to start a motor that is already running. Any ideas? The teeth on the bendix appear to have only a little wear right at the top. Also, this motor seems to be very cold natured, takes 5 minutes or so to warm up and run right, then runs perfect. Is this normal for this motor? All help and info appreciated.

Web.... Those bendix drives actually have a clutch within them. Look directly at the starter bendix drive when this problem is taking place. If the top nut/section of the armature is turning faster than the bendix gear itself, replace the bendix gear drive assy.

Check all of the cables that are associated with the battery, solenoid, and starter. If any of them feel overly warm or hot, there is a loose or dirty connection associated with that cable.

If all of the above check out okay, I'd suggest removing, dismantling, and inspecting the starter itself.

Thank you very much for your help, I will do as you say. If I need a new bendix assy., can you recommend a good place to get one?

WebWizard.... Your local Evinrude/Johnson dealership should be able to supply you with that item. You might also check with NAPA.
