I'm swapping a blown 140 1988 looper for a craigslist find ($150) 1979 140 HP crossflow. Good even compression (100 +/- 5 psi), starts, and so far so good.

I'm not familar with this motor and can't seem to figure out where the trim relay box is supposed to be mounted. I have a suspicion it's just missing. I know where it is on my newer blown looper but... it's vamoose? I know it has power trim/tilt. I'm not that dumb and can see the three spades and power wire harness from the trim motor.

Does anyone know if the factory looper box is interchangable and mounts somewhere easy on the older crossflow?

Thanks

As long as the crossflow has a 2 wire trim motor the relay box from the looper will work. If the exhaust cover on the powerhead has the 2 bosses you can mount the box there. It really doesn't matter where the box is, either on the motor or in the boat, wherever it's easiest for you.

I think 1979, if original, would have had a 3-wire motor, and the box would have been a separate piece, mounted on the transom. They turn up on eBay from time to time...

Chinewalker is correct. The older 3-wire trim motors used a separate control box. It was hard wired direct to the battery, just like the engine. The box was typically mounted under the rear splashwell of the boat. It's not unusual for these boxes to get lost during the sale of an engine. Since the 79's used a 3 wire system, none of the newer (2 wire) boxes (the ones with the pair of relays) will work. The down switch on the control box handle is hardwired direct to the trim motor. The up part of the switch goes through the single old-style starter type relay inside the trim box, due to the large current draw for the up movement. Yes, ebay or a large marine salvage yard is a good place to look for this box.
