1979 20hp merc LU oil amount

how much lower unit oil should be in this motor? this was the first time i drained it and there wasnt that much that came out.. maybe a couple cups full? 5 oz maybe? no water in the oil at all......when i refilled it.. i stuck the bottle nozzle in the bottom hole with the top hole open...but nothing would come out the top...then oil started coming out the prop....think i blew a seal on it? or is there some type of overflow that would of made it come out the prop?

Capacity is about 6 oz., but it should not come out the prop, should fill and come out the vent screw hole at the top of the LU.
