I have a '79 Merc 70 that I unfortunately had to let sit for several years. I recently had
it serviced by a mechanic to get it going again. He rebuilt the carbs and did a couple of
other non-fuel related repairs and maintenance. The boat ran well with the exception of
wanting to stall on acceleration. If I eased the throttle slowly the engine would gradually
and then once the rpms got up it would run great until you slowed down again then the
process would have to be repeated. After talking to some knowledgeable friends it was
believed I needed a new primer bulb. I bought a new fuel line and bulb. I had bought a
new portable tank before I took it in for repair so the tank inside was clean. I then bought
a fuel pump rebuild kit. Before I rebuilt the fuel pump I checked the fuel strainer which
is between the fuel pump and the carbs on my version. It had about 1/2 a teaspoon of
crap in it. I cleaned it and the motor ran great for about an hour. After slowing to go
through a bridge the engine would stall severely on acceleration and I spent about 20
minutes limping at idle speed back towards home. After about 20 minutes it kicked in
and ran great all the way back to the long no wake zone and then would not accelerate
for the short run to the ramp. I rebuilt the fuel pump after that but now when I run it
on the flusher it runs great until the bulb goes soft then it dies. Could the check valves
in the fuel pump be at fault or installed wrong? I was having problems before the rebuild
but at least it would run. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long
post but after reading others I know that details are important. Thanks
