I've been reading these forums and here is my question. This is my first boat
I have a 1979 70 hp evinrude It's a 3 cyl and top cyl had no spark but the other 2 did some I figured it had to be the coil so I changed that and it still has no spark could anybody help me I figure it has to be the power pack but hate to just buy it at 250.00 but I will if I have too.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to iboats.

Do you have access to a DVA meter? Have you first tried cleaning up the ground for the coil?

The following was taken from the CDI Troubleshooting Guide.

1. Check the trigger resistance and DVA output as given below:

Wire Color: Check to Wire Color: Resistance: DVA Reading
White wire: Purple: 38-42: 0.6V or more Connected
White wire: Blue wire: 38-42: 0.6V or more Connected
White wire: Green wire: 38-42: 0.6V or more Connected

2. Check the DVA output on the orange wires from the power pack while connected to the ignition coils. You should have a reading of at least 150V or more. If the reading is low on one cylinder, disconnect the orange wire from the ignition coil for that cylinder and reconnect it to a load resistor. Retest. If the reading is now good, the ignition coil is likely bad. A continued low reading indicates a bad power pack.

Thanks chris. are the wires you are talking about on the terimanal strip? and what kind of load resitor are you talking about. It is a brand new coil. should I run a ground wire right to the coil mounting?

A load resistor is simply another coil to make it easy. Sorry, I realize you replaced the coil, but I just copied the entire directions from the guide. The ground for the coil is right at its mounting, so just ensure that it is clean. That can sometimes create a weak or intermittant spark, which you do not even have, but is worth a try.

Re: 1979 7o hp 1 cyl.no spark

Thanks Chris
I changed the input wires to the coil and found out that the power pack is bad and the new coil is working and now I have 2 colis that are not firing so I'm going with the power pack being bad. Does anybody have a parts manual that could give me a oem # for the power pack I want to order online and they want an oem # to match it. Thanks for your help.

For OEM part numbers, simply go to www.shop.evinrude.com, then follow the prompts to your particular model.

The part number is 0581933 however.

BTW, were you able to test the trigger at all? Just so you know, ignition components are non refundable, so you be sure about your diagnosis.

Good luck.
