No. The 77 was the last year for the old style trim system which mounted outside the transom brackets. The 79 model had the newer style. Basically, the 77 uses a different swivel bracket. It does not have the trim ram thrust pads that the 79 trim rams push on. You might be able to completely disassemble the 85 and swap the swivel bracket and both stern brackets, but it's more work than I would consider. You also can't just swap the powerheads, as they are different-they are not compatible due to the switch to the dual stat arrangement affecting the bottome of the block casting.

I think it'll work. Believe you're off by a year emd. '76 & earlier won't fit. I have a '77 115 and it is 'new' internal style trim. Dual tstats too.

Can you post pics kylake?

Actually, the factory parts lists are really confusing. According to the factory, here is what they show for model year 1977:
Johnson;
old style trim 85 hp: 85el77s, 85etlr77s ,115 hp: 115el77s, 115etlr77s
new style trim: 140 hp, X 85txlr77s only Xtra long mid, X 115txl77s only Xtra long mid
Evinrude;
old style trim 85 hp: 85 hp 85793s, 85799s 115 hp; 115793s, 115799s
New style trim: 140 hp, 85 hp 85790s only, 115 HP 115790S only
Both trim systems were used, but only on specific models. Looks to me like the XL and all 140 engines from this year got the new trim system. All the regular 20" models got the old system.
If you really want to check, look at the 77 115 and see which trim system it has on it. That will tell you which swivel bracket and transom brackets it has.

The only 1977 motor with the newer style bracket and trim was the 140 hp. the 115 used the old style until the 1978 model year. The two are not swapable

That's the 85 and 115 hp trim unit-standard that year. Has been NLA for maybe 15 years. Original part number assembly part number: 172859.

Hard to tell, can you post the model number of your engine? Compare the model number to the chart in reply 4, above. The unit in your picture is the old style.

Looks like it says 73 - 77, V-4, 20" models.

They also made a smaller unit for the motors with less HP. The smaller unit has a smaller lifting plate. I believe the HP rating is stamped the lifting plate.
