1979 alternator

trying to test alt output while running. manual says to disconnect red wire on positive side of starter solenoid, and connect ammeter to where red wire was and to red wire. but there is three wires on positive side, one red battery wire and two red wires coupled together with a electrical connector. 1979 85hp v4. Or if you know another way to test output. I already tested stator it was .7 ohms. rectifier is good too. voltmeter on dash doesnt seem to indicate charging voltage. I believe it should register at least 13 volts when running,p.s. i dont have a voltage regulator.
