Are there any opinions on these boats? I'm looking to possibly purchase one as a first boat. Anything I should look for and be aware of for this brand of boat? It has a OMC 4-cyl 120 hp engine. Thanks for any input.

Seems it might be a little under-powered. If you still have your heart set on it have it surveyed or at least checked out by someone who is familiar with boats. Good luck.

Re: 1979 Century 18ft as first boat

I bought a 1975ish 18ft Starcraft with the same OMC 120hp stern drive last year. My advice is to buy something different.

Now I'm assuming you motor is a Stringer stern drive (I/O). The actual motor is fine as they continue to use the same block etc. for very recent boats. The problem is the stern drive and the availability of parts or people who can repair them. They haven't been made for a number of years and parts are real tough to come by.

Check with the local shops before buying the boat to be sure someone knows something about it.

Re-powering is difficult beause you have a very big hole in your transon for this motor. To put a Merc in, you'd have to re-build the entire back end of the boat.
