Hey guys pretty sure I have a stupid problem here but couldn't find a previous post. My evinrude has always been good to me and when I put it in the garage it was race ready. The battery died over the winter. Charged it up and when I hit the key to start the starter just clicked. Sounds like the helix is hitting the flywheel but the helix doesn't come up at all. Tried tapping it with a hammer, made sure the battery connections were tight and still the same. Didn't look to much into it figured I'd throw a post up. Thanks for any and all replies you guys are the best

Have your battery load tested at your local parts house and then check all your battery cable connections on both the battery and the mtr for being good, clean and tight.

What boobie said. You can't tell if battery cable connectors are clean by looking at them. You have to take them off and scrub them.

yeah so i tightened the 4 bolts on the solenoid, and the one on the starter. changed to a different charged battery and still the click. i didnt take off all of the connections and clean them because they are all tight already and I didnt have this problem ever when I put my boat away in the fall. new solenoid? am I still being an idiot (pretty sure when I figure this out i will feel like a dumbass) ? anything you guys can suggest is very much welcome.

if you have a volt meter put positive on starter post then negative on to a clean bolt head and ask someone to try starting the motor. if the meter reads lower than 10v remove all the cables and clean them then test again. if its over 11v then the starter needs to be stripped and the stator cleaned. over time copper tarnishes and electricity hates that.

p.s dont hit with hammer on the sides as it has perminate magnets that crack and fall off ( been there done that )

Try jumping the starter with a set of automotive jumper cables and a known good battery. If the starter cranks normally, it's ok. Check the solenoid. If the contact tips get burned inside the solenoid, (happens with age) they won't transfer enough current to crank a starter under load.

Connections with hidden corrosion are usually tight. TAKE THEM OFF and scrub them. My bet is that where the negative battery cable is bolted to the block you will measure over a 9V drop across it. That is a tinned copper lug bolted to an alloy block with a steel bolt; a guaranteed corrosion factory, four dissimilar metals. Only a fraction of one ohm in one connection will give the starting circuit the CLICK disease.
