Hey all.

I was looking for some help on a few questions I have on replacing the seals on the mentioned motor's trim/tilt unit (1979 Evinrude 115999R). I have read a bunch of posts on here which have provided a lot of insight, but had to get a few things cleared up before I start the job. I appreciate anyone's help/advice/comments that you can add.
1) Can the trim seals be replaced without having to remove the motor and TT unit from my boat? I thought I read somewhere that I can, and if so..
2) Do I have to remove the tilt cylinder pin so that I can fully tilt/trim in to start the job of seal replacement (I read that in order to remove trim cylinder end cap, everything must be tilted/trimmed in)?
3) The reason I am doing this job is because there is a leak where the trim piston comes out of the cylinder end cap. Is the leak equated to a bad trim o-ring? is this the only part I need to replace? I mean, I got the other trim seals and o-rings to swap out since I will be working around that area anyways...

That is all I can think of right now, but I am sure I will have additional questions along the way. Feel free to post anything else I should look at, tips, or comments to this particular job.

Thanks!
Mark

of course i would prop the motor up before lowering the TT unit to fully in with the motor "kickstand" as well as a few extra tiedowns for support during this work.

any help would greatly be appreciate. was looking to start the job this weekend and wanted to hear from anyone if my thoughts above are OK or way off.

thanks!

Tilt the mtr all the way up and set the tilt lock if it has one. Otherwise block it up or tie it to a tree. Make sure you got the right spanner wrenches to take the caps off. Do you have a manual ??

I pulled one of the leaking caps off a trim cylinder on my 79. With the correct spanner wrench, it was a simple job. Likely you won't get the small trim pistons to retract. They normally only retract when the engine comes down on them-due to pressure in the large cylinder. That should not make any difference to your job.

Yes, I have a tilt lock, wrench and manual. So I am to tilt it all the way up, but down the tilt lock, then tilt it all the way back in again and continue until the trim pistons are all the way in also? Then at that point remove the caps? Thanks for your reply.

So youre saying i dont have to tilt/trim in all the way to do this job? i can leave them both tilted/trimmed out when taking off the end caps?

I am able to get the trim pistons to retract without the motor weight on it.... which brings me to another question... my boat is docked on a lake, when I am done for the day, I set the motor on the tilt lock and then continue to tilt/trim in all the way until the trim pistons are all the way in. I do this so crap and grim doesnt build up on the trim pistons while it sits in the lake while not being used. Is this ok to do, or should i just leave them out all the way?

Well, just to follow up with the results, the replacement went really well. No issues as it way pretty straight forward. The only difficulty I had was removing the end caps. With the unit T/T'ed all the way in, it must have put heavy hydraulic pressure on the endcap making it very stubborn to remove. I just T/T'ed it out just a tad, that it was enough to remove that pressure allowing the end caps to be removed easier. Got it all zipped up and ran the T/T in and out 5 times to bleed the system of air and she is working great. No leaks. Time for the water!
