Hi I have a 1979 Evinrude 10EL79B Serial # E5045498 that is not running right. I can get the motor to fire after a few pulls if I hold the throttle wide open. It will run with the throttle opened up, but as soon as I go to idle it down it shuts off and acts like it is running out of fuel?? Any ideas???

I recently purchased it from someone who had installed the 15HP carb on the motor, to make it a 15HP.

Any help would be great, I am really lost and do not know much about outboards.

if you'll google...sschapterpsa...you'll see OMC 9.9-15hp...read Leeroy's Ramblings.concerning carb rebuilding...fuel pumps...and carb to ignition timing...it'll be a starting point..also if it's a new to you motor...change the impeller and lower unit oil...outboardbooks.com or ebay are sources of factory manuals

Sounds like it is running similar to my 83 15 hp Johnson when I bought it. After rebuilding the carb and replacing the original cork float with a metal one, it made a world of difference. The only trouble I had after that was because I didn't set the float drop. Great motors.

The idle passage in the carb is blocked.....rebuild it following the info already provided.

Do you have a compression tester? How about a spark tester.I'd start with those. If compression is OK and spark is OK.You could try to set the carb fuel air mixture. If that dont help.the intake and leaf plates are I believe the same for the 9.9 and 15,.
Make sure the fuel lines are good and not drawing air.Try a spalsh of mixed fuel into the cylinders, remove the plugs and put a 1/2teaspoon MIXED fuel in each then start it.
Try that see what happens. It may need a carb rebuild

It has spark, and I have not tested the compression. The carb is brand new. I have the box and receipt to prove it, from the person I bought it from. So rebuilding doesnt seem like the answer, but hey what do i know.

Do the fuel in each cylinder,if it runs then dies when that little fuel is gone,It will be a carb problem.

The carb could be NOS for all we/you know and been sitting in that box for years so it dont mean that much really. It only takes a tiny amount of dirt from anywhere to restrict one of the passages inside the carb and you have an issue on your hands. A carb rebuild kit should not be necessary provided you dont tear up a gasket when pulling apart, disassemble and give it a thorough clean and blow out all passages with compressed air, if it ends up not solving the problem all it has really cost you is a bit of your time.
