I am currently looking at a used boat with a 1979 Evinrude 85 HP. owner indicates it's missing on 1 cylinder and needs new stator. I don't know if he is being straight or not as I'm not familiar with that sytem.Any help would be appreciated. Does that sound right?

Could be. Before you by it do a compression and spark test. Check the lower unit for water. If all that checks out ok, the rest can be repaired.

Re: 1979 Evinrude engine miss

Thanks for the heads up. I'm more familiar with my 1955 Evinrude Aquasonic big twin 25 so when he said stator I thought he might have been confused. I thought that was an alternator part.Like I said I know very little about the motor, wasn't even aware the stator controlled the spark. Thanks again.

Let the price you pay reflect the cost of repairs.

That engine has two power packs-one for each head. You can swap them to see if the spark loss moves to the other head. If it does, then you probably have a bad pack. If it does not move, then it is possible the stator or the timer base is bad.
