I have a 1979 johnson 15h outboard. I am getting water into the gearcase. I replaced the water pump and seals below pump. Problem appears to be seal on shift rod going int lower unit. How do i get the shifr rod out.

It simply threads out.---Then you run a tap into the bushing ( 3 threads ) and pull the bushing out.

Thats cool. What size tap 1/4".
Cant help with the tap size ..........................but whatever fits!

Don't forget there are other places that can allow water in.

The prop shaft seals have usually been the culprit when I've had water getting in They are easily damaged by fishing line etc.

The seals on the oil drain and level screws could be the trouble too if you've reused old ones

I changed the seals under the water pump. When i did pressure test, I saw air bubbles coming from shifter seal. May find more after i close this up. Thanks!

A piece of threaded rod along with a washer / plate and a nut pulls it out.
