Let me preface this by saying this does not always happen but most of time. Boat will not come off plane, just almost makeing it to full power while doing this makes fluctuating high pitching sound. Then suddenly will go like hell like it was wound up. It will then unannounced go back to no power but never really dies just putts. I have replace power packs & checked for spark and sound difference by pulling off plug wires one at a time. had thermostats replaced thinking it was running too cold. had carbs rebuilt. Major symptom i see now is it is spitting gas / oil from the spitter and cooling outlets. Enough to make the water around the slip pretty slick. i will next check the compression. I would have done that first but i do not have a tester. I was first thiking bad gas but has happend over many tanks. Could it be stator or would that just die and not intermitently work? Any help would be appreciated. I hope it is not a blown engine. Help

I'm kinda thinkin' like you. Do the compression check and see if that tells anything. When removeing the plugs, examine each one carefully and note any differences and which plug came from which cylinder. Lettus know what you find and we can go from there.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks Hooty
I am going to try a new portable gas can with fresh gas and oil. the gas in the boat is from last yr. I did put the stabilizer in it last year. Someone told me that if it sometimes runs good it is probably not a bad cylnder and since i could not find anyone with a compression tester I will try the other stuff until i find one.. they wanted 39 bucks for one. A motor head friend thinks it is sucking air. I will let u know how it goes.

i ran the engine with new gas and oil in a seperate portable tank. so i do not think there is a leak in the fuel line at least from the tanks. still did the same thing. Puttered at first then ran full speed wide open. then suddenly die out, not all the way, then will pick up again and will go nice. could i not be getting enough gas to the engine? How do u check for an air leak? Could i do any damgae by spraying carb cleaner while going full speed. is that the correct way to clean the carbs?
