I have a long leg which I would like to convert to short. I posted on craigslist for a parts motor and got a hit. Its a 1977 evinrude 25hp. When I am at evinrude.com searching parts list the numbers of parts does not seem to match years. Is this a safe purchase for me as far as parts go. will the lower unit bolt up. The seller states that the evinrude had over heated and has some but poor compression.

Thanks you all have been a great help.

that the parts #s go to ishopmarine.com put the numbers in there parts search at the top center of the page. then if they come up with the same superceded part # they are the same. some of the motor had some major changes in the lower units, during that time frame.

Thx Tdad
I checked that web ishopmarine.com. It appears waterpump and most gear housing parts are different but some parts are the same and the carb rebuild kits are the same too. Important is if the 77 evinrude lower unit will bolt up correctly to the 79. I guess unless some one has the experience with these years I will have to bring the lower unit of the 79 with me to see if it matches the 77.

Thanks again

also that the drive shaft splines and shift linkage match.
