1979 Johnson 35 HP lower unit interchangeability

Hey all,
I have a '79 Johnson 35 HP that a buddy gave me. It's missing the lower unit. Can anyone tell me what year/HP range Johnson/Evinrude lower unit will fit this? It's a short shaft.

I would go to shop.evinrude.com and start looking at parts for 35s from 1976 to 1990. If the part numbers are the same the lower units will fit.

77 was the first year they had the exhaust out the prop. The 77 and 78 are the same, not sure about the 79....I do know that the 1981 is different...same gears and all but different shift linkage. The 77 and 78 have the side plate with 2 screws that you take out high up on the mid section of the boat motor, behind it is where you disconnect the shift linkage. The 81 you disconnect the shift linkage behind the water intake down low on the foot. This may help you figure out which type lower unit you need.

A guy offered me a jet unit off a 1978 50 HP. Do you think it will fit the 1979 35 HP?

Don't believe they will fit. The 40 and up back in that time had a much bigger foot. You could look both motors up and see if the offered jet units for both, if they did cross reference the part numbers. marineengines.com has a easy to use parts look up based on year and model.
