1979 Johnson 70 HP

Well I'm getting ready to start working on the old 70. going this week and picking up the Manuel. I just need to know what I'm looking for. do I get the owners Manuel or the service Manuel? I know ii will probably need to rebuild the carbs. i have rebuilt car carbs but never a OB. I know this engine hasn't seen water for about 12 years it's been in my shed for 2 of those years while the old Starcraft is being restored. I've read the "Top Secret File". And still reading it more. just wanna know what i am gonna need for the compression testing? tools, battery, ect....???

Any help would be great...

Ge tthe OMC manual not Seloc or Clymers or any of the cd you see, a factory servie manual, you can get one here at iboats or poke around on Ebay, they are worth every dime.

No, the owners manual is really not necessary. It will have basic information about your motor and how it operates. I'll bet you can pretty much figure that stuff out on your own. For any maintenance or repair issues, it will just simply say "take to your local Johnson authrorized service center".

While you are waiting on the manual get yourself a compression tester and a spark tester. Reasonable prices on Ebay. Good investment because without the information they can provide you will be flying blind.

What type of compession gauge? will the one work from an auto parts store?

aslo gonna build a OB engine stand for it this weekend..

You can get an adjustable spark tester at most parts houses for around $8.00. They also have compression gauges.

Ok I'm having to move the boat from the place I live. community don't want boats or any type of trailers in the community.. wich really sux. So a friend of mine is going to let me park it out at his place might even get a building to work on it in. matbe a good plus... But I want to work on the engine here at the house. What will I need from the boat to be able to make the engine run for testing? I am building a stand for it. I know I will need battery, fuel. What else will I need? Control/with key?? wireing?? reason need to move by end of week...

It can be worked on with very little but the remote connected makes life easier. A barrel deep enough to hold water up past the water pump will help with the tests and set up.
You will need a fuel tank of course.

If it's been sitting long go ahead and pick up some lower unit oil...Just to be safe... Totally agree about the manual.. I have a Seloc and the OEM manual and it makes a world of difference...
