After winter storage, the power trim on my motor goes up fine but will not go down. I have checked the fluid, the manual release screw etc. yet the trim motor runs but the outboard motor does not move. Any help would be appreciated!

Re: 1979 Johnson 85 hp outboard trim problem

I had this EXACT same problem with my 1975 85hp!! You wouldn't believe what the problem was...

So I was on the biggest lake in Arkansas, WAY out in the middle. Over 50' deep.. catfish heaven! I stop, anchor down, and toss some lines. I catch a few, pull anchor, try to tilt down.. NOTHING! Tilt motor running, motor not budging.

After 1 hour of swimming around under the boat and engine, I found out how stupid I really am. The engine has a catch on it for towing. If you trim all the way up, the catch engages. Tilt your engine fully up, find the catch, press it in (mine has no handle for ease), and tilt it down. See if that helps.. you'd be amazed the types of tiny problems happen like this.

Hope this helps!

-Ex
