1979 L6 Mercury has no spark?

If the ignition switch is bad, can the motor turn over in the start position, but not activate the ignition system? Therefor no Spark?

Also, is there an easy way to check and see if I am getting spark at the distributer?

Yes a bad switch can do that here's a easy test for the system

Got the new switchbox yesterday, 2986 a8, It's installed and the motor runs great!
