Re: 1979 Mariner 25 hp shift linkage help!!!

I think it is the same set up as my '82 30 HP. The upper and lower shift shafts are joined at the lower unit with a coupling nut and a lock nut. What I would do is:
Disconnect the upper and lower shift shafts;
Determine if the gears are in F, N or R;
Put your shifter in the position (F, N or R) that matches the gear you are in;
Re-connect the coupling without changing the positions of the lower shift shaft or the shifter.

Ok I'll try .....I can put it in reverse and it sounds like it locks in I can give it a lil gas not much and it backs my boat up but if I give it to much gas it slips out of gear and when I'm going in reverse I have to hold the shift lever back at same time going in reverse ...I don't think it's gear problems cause I change lower unit from my parts motor and it does same thing just never adjusted a linkage before so I don't want to mess nothing up
