Whats yalls thoughts on Merc 402...I have found one for a very good deal. My frind has the 50 and says you can't kill it. :D

I cant stand the motors. Thats only my preference... Ive had at least a half dozen of htem. The upper motor mounts dont last long. They should have made them 3 cylinder 40s not 2. If you feel good about it and its cheap get it because parts are avaliable new and lots of used parts for those motors are around made many of them tooo many good luck!!

Great engines, never had a problem with a 402, I agree that they should have been 3 cylinder engines, nevertheless, these are great little engines, just make sure you check the compression and lower unit oil.

I like them, too. I've got three similar motors at the moment ('67 350, '69 350 and '85 35) all same basic confinguration. Fairly smooth for a bigger bore twin. Had one Merc Tech tell me it was Mercury's attempt at building a Johnrude - big bore, long stroke, as opposed to Merc's traditional small bore, short stroke approach...<br />- Scott
