1979 Merc 800 smokes real bad

Hi. I just got a `79 merc 800. Its been laid up for 3 years. So far I replaces some wiring and the impellor. It starts right up but idles real rough and creates a huge cloud of thick blue smoke. I know the fuel I have is 40:1 when I should be using 50:1, but would that make it smole this bad. I let it tun for 10mins to warm up but no change.

What could be wrong???

have you cleaned, soaked and rebuilt the carbs? after 3 years they probably need it. then do a linc and sinc by Clams. a total engine decarb with sefoam products wouldn't hurt.

Particularly the end part where you adjust the idle needles in the water in gear.

Ok thanks everyone. I tried adjusting the idle needles in my driveway(in a barrel of water). But no change. After I do all the other stuff above, will I have to do the adjustment at the lake or will using my barrel setup work?

I'm just worried about launching it until I'm 100% sure its running right.

you don't have to launch. go on a slow day and back the trailer in you can even leave the strap on as long as you can get deep enough. start it and put in gear. adjust. then launch if you feel comfortable.

I cleaned the carbs real good and it seems a lot better. Thats as far as I got now a thunderstorm just arrived :%.

I didnt use the seafoam yet as I havent found it. I asked at my local boat parts store and they said they heard of it but dont have it, or anything like it. Is there an equivalent product I could use?

you can find it in the auto parts store. look in the engine faq section for decarb, gives good directions.
