Greetings... As noted, I have a 1979 Mercury 40hp. It has had numerous things done since it's purchase which have helped but not fixed everything. New wiring, new stator, new starter solenoid, lower unit service, water pump, carb cleaned, fuel filter screen cleaned. The motor has fairly good pickup to what seems to be just past 1/2 throttle but will not "wind up". All i'm getting is about 15-16 mph (gps) on a 17' alumacraft... Seems like it should be doing more. I've heard hi speed jet in the carb and read hi speed winding in stator... any other suggestions? How do i check the hi speed winding in the stator if carb checks out ok?....Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my 1974 50hp Merc. The problem was not the motor but the actual throttle control. I purchased a manual, opened the control unit and reassembled it correctly. Easiest way to check is to push your throttle lever forward to full throttle and check your carb to see if it's fully opened. If not, the controller may be your issue. Good luck.

Thanks.... I've had the controls off when i replaced the throttle and shift cables about a month ago. Carb opens completely during WOT. I'm cleaning carb (again)...what is the purpose of the small line from the fuel bowl to the side of the carb???? That hose is hard and will be replaced. What about fuel lines???
