Hey ya'll, hoping to get some good advise - I just got a boat with a 1979 Mercury Outboard 70 HP motor on it. It runs fine, except that it does not "pee". By that I mean there's no water coming out the little nipple on the back of the engine, and as a result, my engine seemed to be running really, really hot

I'm a life long fisherman, but 100% new to owning a boat, so I hope someonce out there can call tell me what the problem likely is (water pump?), as well as what I need to buy, where to buy it, and how much $$$ I'm going to have to spend.

thanks for any and all help fellas.

Re: 1979 Mercury outboard - 70 HP

I have the same motor

Just did the Impeller myself

It's not hard

Merc kit # is 47-89983T 1
cost me $40 at dealer.

Need a 5/8 wrench, 5/8 socket, 1 extension, and a 1/2 in socket. (going from memory, so don't hold me to the sizes...I think that was it. )

Couple beers, and go slow and careful.

My experience:

LUBE THE NEW IMPELLER!!!! LUBE LUBE LUBE!!

being new to outboards and knowing nothing I did not do this simple step.

After re-assambly the first "twist" when I started the motor broke the new impeller and the little metal impeller housing (the little tab broke)

$30 from dougrussel and I got a new impelller and 3 impeller caps (they were so cheap, and DR has A $30 minimum order I found out)

SO LUBE!!! Spray some white grease on the impeller, and in the housing.
Then place impeller on shaft, place impeller cap on top and twist clockwise while holding impeller cap at slight angle. You'll figure that out, and then impeller will slide right in nicely.

After reading about white grease on this board I did it that way, and she is now back together and working properly..

next issue is carbs
