I have a 1979 mercury tower of power 1500
It runs great out of water but at the lake it will only plane out with 1 person in the boat.(16 foot ski boat)It flew out of the water last year with 4 people in it!
I put it up in the winter and now its a big anchor. The carbs were leaking gas but with a little carb cleaner in the holes in the carb and that stopped. The carbs were rebuilt 2 years ago.Any help would be great:mad:

have you checked the prop for a spun hub i'm not sure you can partially spin a prop hub and i wouldn't think that with a spun hub you would be able to plane at all but might be worth a look

I think I'd start by taking the cover off, going WOT on the lake and looking back to see if the butterflys look fully opened. (or maybe get some help with this for safety's sake)

Maybe a linkage was loose last year and over the winter, with the expanding and contracting of temperatures, something slipped when you hit it for the first time this year.

You do not need to have the motor running to check to see fi the carbs open all the way. Do it with the motor off. it is a heck of a lot safer.

I would check compresson and spark. It sounds like one cylinder is not firing. Find out why.
