Hey all, new boater here. I recorded this video mostly for the sound. Does this sound normal? It sounded like something is rattling to me but I don't know what "normal" is. I realize I still have a bit more tuning to do. The motor was ice cold.
thanks.

Oh yeah, the tach is not working correctly. give it a few rpm's and it pegs to 6000.

all comment's welcome!

Shouldn't run them with drive up and no water, prolly the terrible noise u hear is ball gears and water impeller tearing up.

thanks for the tips CobiaXL. drive was up but there was the garden hose muffs on it with water going through it. I will always put the drive down in the future.

yup, motor down and it sounds a lot better. thanks. I only ran it that way for probably less then 10 minutes so hopefully I didn't damage anything.

Running with the drive up like that will chew up the ball gears quick. Stringers should *always* be run fully tilted down to the stops. Definitely sounded like the gears making noise.

Can't tell without seeing them. Depends on how bad they were before too. Here's some really chewed up ones that I replaced on my boat a couple years ago:

WOW, that is amazing. What is a good indicator that this ball gear is wearing out or wore out? Honestly I do not even know what it does. I suppose i would find metal in the gear lube but from which unit? I have been searching for an illustration but haven't located one yet.

thanks again!

It's the coupling between the outdrive & the intermediate housing (intermediate housing includes the bell-housing that attaches to the motor). In modern I/O drives, they use a shaft with U-joints. In a Stringer they used these ball gears that would mesh when the drive was fully lowered. They are entirely external so you won't find metal shavings anywhere in any lube from these wearing. Just tilt the drive all the way up and look underneath it & you'll see them. If they don't look anything like the new pair in my pic above on the left, you'll have to look into replacing them.

I see the damage, but it really isn't that bad. I think those gears will be fine for many years yet.

You didn't hurt anything, LNM, unless you ran it in gear and under a load. All you did was knock some rust off the ball gears where they usually don't mesh.

Don't do it again, but don't sweat it. Those ball gears looked like that before you bought the boat, and fall into the "normal wear, will be fine for several seasons" category.

I see that grease fitting there too. should I shoot some marine grease in there?

Wouldn't hurt :) That greases the shaft through the intermediate housing for the TruCourse steering.
