I bought a 1979 slickcraft that needs a motor. I have a 350 to put in it but it is a automobile motor. I have all the marine externals to put on the motor. Is it going to hurt to put this motor in for a year or so. My plan is to in a couple of years build the motor up a litte for a winter project. I would like to get the boat in the water this year and make sure the boat is going to workout nice before I put to much money into it.

Okay got the motor. It has the spot for the mechanical fuel pump, but it looks like the last motor that was in they used a electric fuel pump. It has the pump and filter still there. Is there a advantage to either.

Which fuel line do have from the engine that came with the boat?

There was no motor. But it has the electric pump and filter hooked up to the tank.

so the boat you bought with no engine has an electric fuel pump and filter already installed??

and the engine you now have for the boat has no fuel pump but a spot on the block for a mechanical pump??

and you are wondering which set-up is the best??

Re: 1979 sl 200 slickcraft motor

no problem, just want to be sure everybody is on the same page

a 1979 slickcraft was not equipped with an electric fuel pump, most likely it had a ford based mercruiser (888,233,etc...) which was carb'd and had a mechanical fuel pump

not saying you can't use the electric fuel pump but you need to wire it properly (to the oil sender/switch) and you should verify the pressure output is within spec for you carb/engine

your best bet is to ditch the electric set-up, get a mechanical fuel pump, and set the engine up the way it should be - this way when you want to swap out the long block/upgrade yours, you have the proper components already installed

Yea, get rid of the electric pump PERIOD!
Can you pics of the engine compartment so we can figure out what your dealing with.

dubs may be right being a ford but '79 was well into chevy's. And it does matter, starting from scratch.

That being said, Slick did put fords in some boats beyond the change over year.
pics are good
