Hey everybody. As a newjack, I'm happy that I found this board and have enjoyed looking at everybody's work for the past week or so.
I wasn't sure where to post this so I put it in the restoration forum.....seems closest.
The wife and I are boat shopping, wanting something fairly cheap and will be looking at a 79 Starcraft (supersport i believe). Has a 73 evinrude 115 outboard on it. Says it was in the water last about 18 months ago......hubby winterized it and it's been in the garage since. Listed for $1250.
Anything I should be wary of concerning this model or motor? I can look for cosmetic/floor/etc problems but beyond that I'm pretty green.
I have no problem with minor repairs but don't want a lemon........speaking of lemons.......here's a pic of the boat in question.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: 1979 Starcraft

For starters, it's not a Super Sport. It may be a QueStar 16. The Super Sports were aluminum. As with any 30-year old fiberglass boat, closely inspect the cockpit floor, transom, etc. for signs of rot. I've rebuilt several older Starcrafts that had rotted components.

As for the motor, it's only as good as the maintenance it has received. Assume that it will need waterpump serviced, lower unit oil refilled and the carbs rebuilt. A compression check is also in order BEFORE you buy.

Other than that, it's a sharp looking boat! I love the 1970s Starcraft glass hulls!

Re: 1979 Starcraft

thanks for the reply. you may be correct about being fiberglass, however she said that the title says aluminum but not the model. i thought super sport due to it being aluminum....but in the pictures i don't see any rivots.
also, the questars that i've seen don't have the open bow....but i'm relying on pictures from the internet.
guess i'll find out when i get up there. thanks for your advice. do you think $1200 is reasonable for this setup if it's in decent shape?

Re: 1979 Starcraft

I have a '73 85 and we had to put some $$ into it when we got it to replace a number of electrical components but since then it's been reliable. '73 just dodges the electric shift bullet.
