198? Evinrude 35 fuel leak / fire

Hello,

My grandson has a 35 HP Evinrude, electric start, remote, 2 cylinder outboard. There is no tag on it, so, I do not know the specific model number or year, but I would guess early to mid 80s.

The outboard was given to him and I was trying to start it for him yesterday. I hooked up the battery cables to it and it cranked over but would not start. I had the cowling off, squeezed the fuel primer until I got rock hard and on the third try or so, it caught on fire underneath where the cowling would be and was also dripping fuel from the lower unit where the exhaust would come out. I quickly put the fire out and there did not seem to be any further damage.

I removed the fuel pump, leaving the fuel lines in place on it, squeezed the primer bulb and fuel squirted out of the little hole in the back of the fuel pump that gets the pressure and vacuum pressure from the engine. However, I did not see any fuel leaks on the carb, or the fuel inlet and outlet hoses to / from the fuel pump itself.

What I am thinking is that there must be some sort of leak inside the fuel pump that is causing fuel to go inside the engine, which works its way through the exhaust ports and out through the lower unit and I guess being ignited by the spark plugs, but that is just a guess.

I ordered a new pump from ebay but would appreciate any input or thoughts from this community as to if the fuel pump should be squirting out fuel from the pressure / vacuum hole.

The diaphragm is ruptured. Gas shouldn't come out of the pulse hole, only the outlet port when squeezing the bulb.

"fuel squirted out of the little hole in the back of the fuel pump..." is a classic example of a ruptured diaphram.

Your new fuel pump should/will address the issue.

Thanks for the replies. I thought for sure that the fuel pump is defective. I ordered a used one and a new one and hopefully both will be good and will fix the problem and I can keep one for a spare. AND, I need to remind the grandson to keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case.

In theory some fuel in the crankcase could travel down the Pulse Hose

It is unusual for gasoline leaking from the fuel pump to catch fire in the way you have described. If the fuel was vaporized, that is a different story. I would be careful with that motor until you fix the cause of the fire. Maybe a crankcase leak?

Alternatively, Ether sprayed into an engine will catch fire real easy.

If it has a primer system, that can also be a source for leakage. (Could help date the motor too, as I think '84 was the first year for the system(?))

Just an update:

I replaced the fuel pump with a brand new one. Zero leaks, engine fired up but now I have another issue which I will post in another thread. Thanks for all the suggestions.
