my evinrude developed a new problem as you are going full throttle it seems like it drops a cylinder and then after awhile it will pick it back up. i have replaced two of the coils so i was thinking about replacing the other two coils and see if that fixes it. is there anything that someone else thinks the problem is?

Rather than throw sometimes expensive electrical parts at it, get your hands on the CDI Troubleshooting Guide, a wise 19.95 investment, a DVA Meter, another wise investment, 85.95, and properly test the ignition components so you can narrow the problem down to the faulty component, THEN buy the right part.

Your description does sound like you are dropping a coil. Remove all the coils and clean their grounding straps and clean the engine block where the grounding straps bolt on.

You already have 2 new coils so you don't need any equipment to test them and the other 2 coils. Just a matter of switching them around and see if the problem folloows a particular coil. You problem is getting the motor to act up so you can do a definitive spark test on a 4 cylinders.

That's what I was thinking. I can get a new coil for 23.50 to replace a coil that is 27 years old. I think I will try that route first. but if that doesn't fix it I think I will just take it to the shop. Thanks to everyone Greg
