So, the powerhead is now pretty much complete once I get the right air jets in place. Now, I'm off to tackle the midsection. The wiring to the T&T is, well, suspect at best. I haven't taken the unit off yet, but I'm just going to go out on a limb here and assume that lamp cord isn't OEM. Can I get the OEM wiring anymore? If not, what should I be replacing it with, and which color wire goes where?

The other wire bundle looks oem, although it's seen some better days. I'm hoping if I take a few feet off I'll find it in decent enough shape.

The wiring associasted with the PTT sender unit that leads to the PTT gauge resembles lamp cord.

The PTT electric motor of course uses a heavier gauge.

Well, maybe the lamp cord looking stuff is proper then.

Never had a T&T unit on any of my outboards. You can probably all look forward to me asking a lot of questions.

I'm pretty sure it needs some new seals since it won't stay tilted on its own. I'm assuming I should remove the whole unit, inspect, repair, paint and reinstall.

Let me know when you get to replacing the seals and opening the unit up. I know enough to be dangerous :D

What colour wires are coming directly off the trim motor?

In reference to your unit leaking down, do both the trim and tilt leak down, or just the tilt? If they both leak down I would first look at the manual release screw and o ring. Also check the trim pistons and sleeves (o rings). If just the tilt leaks, it is likely an internal problem with a valve or a leaky tilt cylinder line or tilt cylinder valve.

Re: 1980 115 Tilt and Trim

I don't know if the trim leaks. For now, it's just up on a stand (no power to the unit) and I used the manual release to tilt while removing the LU. It's as decent a bet as any that the manual release needs a new o-ring. Still, the unit looks like hell, so I'm going to remove and paint at the very least.

The wires coming off the trim motor go to a large lump or electrical tape with another bundle coming out. I'm making no assumptions that the number of wires or colors match. I'll let you know once I remove all the tape etc.

This is one of those takes as long as it needs to projects.

After removing the spliced-in 5-wire bundle I can now tell it's a 3-wire system. The OEM wires look pretty good.

Not sure if you have a wiring diagram but in case you do not this should come in handy.

I've got the OEM service manual, but really haven't looked to see if it references a 2-wire or 3-wire yet.

Thanks for the diagram, regardless.
