Hello,

I have a E35ECSM with malfunctioning lower unit and I was given a suggestion that the lower unit from a 1994 15" 20hp model would be interchangeable into it. Is anybody able to confirm that? The units look the same, but part number for e.g. water pump, water line, drive shaft, and screws are different while again the aligning stud is the same part.

And if they fit is the transmissoin ratio the same? With the old unit 10x15" propeller was a bit too steep and I'll have to decide between 10x13 or 10x15.

Look in the "Top Secret File", there is a cross reference chart there. Maybe it will help you out.

Thank you, but no help there. I have the newer lower unit coming in, I'll let you know how it turns out. But I found a reference saying that the water pump kit is interchangeable with the older 35hp and newer 20hp.

Got the newer lower unit. It has 5mm shorter drive shaft, larger holes for mounting screws and more reduction. About 2,2:1 against 1,8:1. But aside from those differences, it seems to be a bolt-on replacement. Now I'll need a new water pump kit, propeller, etc. and I'll be back on water, I think. :)

I am inclined to think that all models listed on sterndrive.info have atleast some hope with swapping lower units. Those are:
20hp thru-prop 1985-1998
25hp thru-prop 1985-2005
35hp thru-prop 1980-1996
