I just purchased a 15 hp evinrude motor. It was a motor that was stored for alot of years in a basement. Probably only about 15 hrs on the motor. One of those years it flooded. I pulled the head and there was rust on the spark plugs and rust on the cylinder walls. After a little wd-40 in the cylinder and some hand cranking the pistons are now working again. Inspection of the intake and exhaust ports didnot reveal any significant water or rust, and no pitting on the cylinder walls. I cleaned the cylinders up as best I could and put the head back on. I put it in a clean garbage can with fresh gas and it fired and ran on the third pull. I mixed the gas extra rich about 20:1 and sprayed fogging oil in the carb as soon as it fired. I also replaced the impellor. Now that you have the backgroung here are my questions.
1. How do I know if the engine is overheating? The water that comes out the **** hole is cool to the touch. But is a steady solid stream at idle. The engine is not too hot to the touch except on the head.

2. Is there any way to tell if the crank bearing or anything inside the case is corroded? I saw two cover on the engine is one of these an insprection cover.

3. Is tere anything else I can do to improve my chances of not ruining this motor anymore?

Thank You

The only way to know how much damage is done is to pull her down. Odds are good the crank and bearings are etched to some degree. No way of knowing how long she'll last without pulling her down. If it was me, I'd run her.....she is getting a little dated, and odds are, you wouldn't replace the crank and bearings anyway.....(costly) She may go for a long time.
If you want a project, and have the time, pull her down and see how she looks. Its your call...

Ran it today for 3 hours trolling and a little bit at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. No apparent problems yet. When I took it out of the water I noticed that there was a white greasy sludge inside the propellor. I checked the gear oil, no problems. So I figure this is just a build up from running the fuel at an extra rich level ( 25 to 1).

You changed the Impeller? How involved was it and about how long did it take? I have a 1980 9.9hp and 35hp, thinking about changing the impeller. Any info about the process would be helpful. Thanks

I agree with Schematic. Run the motor as long as it lasts. Stripping it down could turn out to quite costly. When you open up an engine there are always parts that you end up changing that you hadn't planned for. From what you've said it wouldn't seem that you'll be loading it that much anyway. I'd return to the 50:1 ratio since it's running normal now.
Maurice
