Hello everyone

I would like more power out of my pontoon, currently I have a 70 HP Pro series johnson, i believe a 1990 motor. There is a local boat for sale with a 1980 or 1982 evinrude 200 hp outboard. my thought is to buy the boat, swap motors, then sell the other boat with a 70 hp and I end up with the 200 hp on the toon.

The model number of the evinrude engine is E200TRLC I might be off on the letters at the end but I think I am pretty close to the correct model number.

Is this a good motor or is this a crappy motor?

Thanks

Scott

1. What is your 'toon rated for? It seems to me that nearly tripling the power is not a good idea.

2. The 'Rude 200 was a good engine 30 years ago, albeit very thirsty. No telling what the years of care or neglect may have done to it

I have a 200 from that era, it runs well with no real issues. Not knowing what your toon is, going from a 70 to a 200 may just fold it up, then putting a 70 on a boat that needs a 200 may make it a worthless piece of junk.

My toon is a 28 foot, triple toon party barge.

I understand your concern with the HP increase.

My intention is to add 2 more toons therefore have less drag in the water. Boat would be more liike a flat bottom boat which have 200+ hp on the flat bottom boats in my area.

I am kicking the idea around, would rather have a 4 stroke I/O that is mounted inside the center toon. I saw one for sale couple of years ago, should have pulled the trigger on it but I didn't.

Thanks for your input

28 triple toon should handle it, it the mount is strong enough for the weigh. i don't think you would need the other toons.

I agree, I probably do not need 5 toons, but it would look cool and I would be the only one on the lake with 5 toons! :D

The original pistons in these engines were high ring versions. Many of them had ring coking problems and were prone to piston/ring failure after many years. I'd be surprised if they were the original pistons. Despite that, if the compression is ok, it could be a good engine. They were not great out of the hole, but ran great on top end. If you purchase, I'd suggest you decarb it before you run it hard. New, they ran 108-110# compression on all 6 cyls.
