1980 25 hp evinrude wont rev out with the hood on

I am test running my motor in a barrel, and it will not rev with the cover on. As soon as remove the cover it seems to run out a lot better. I think running the motor in a barrel causes it to suck the thick smokey fumes through the intake and run poorly. However, I can run other motors in the barrel and it doesnt seem to affect them. I just replaced the plugs and cleaned out the carb. I am also running a can of Sea Foam in the 6 gal tank, so that may aid to the smoke. The motor will start and idle perfectly. So i am wondering if I was on a lake and moving if I would have the same problem or if anyone else has had this sort on thing happaen to them?

I forgot to mention it has electric start, if that makes a difference.

i does get more exhaust in a barrel. the only way to know for sure it try it. it could have a bad base gasket between powerhead and lower unit, allowing exhaust up into the cowl.

I have had the motor on a lake before and noticed some similar behavior, but there were a handful of other problems i had noticed. I had some prop hub spin, over gapped and fouled up plugs, plugs barely finger tight, and a dirty carb. I thought all these contributed to my problem, but sometimes (in bursts) it would run perfect even before I touched the motor. I have had a 9.5 hp Johnson that needed the same gasket, I was told. I took it in put a new gasket in, and it still didnt work. Is replacing that gasket something that a do-it-yourselfer can do or is it pretty involved? I am not real familiar with outboards, but I can definately swing a wrench. Thanks for the help!

We have the same motor. I ran mine in a barrel this past spring, but I don't recall reving the engine. I know the guy I bough it from did though, and had no problems.

if mechanically inclinded you can do it. on the 9.5, check the exhaust/pee hose for a leak, had one that was cracked on the bottom side, would stall the motor as soon as the cover went on.

Thanks for the replys. I checked the "pee hose" and it seemed fine. The engine doesnt choke out when the engine is idling, with the hood on. My 9.5 would die almost immediately unless the cover was off. So this makes me believe (i hope) it may not be the same gasket problem. I ran the 25 this morning, and with a little air blowing past the motor (with the hood on) it seemed to run out fine. I used an air hose to keep the exhaust from being sucked back into the carb. Hopefully this means when Im on a lake and moving, itll be fine. Ill let you know, thanks again for the replys.
