I have a Johnson Seahorse that I put a new gear case seal kit and water pump kit into yesterday. The seal kit went flawlessly due to having a factory service manual and reading posts on this forum, but the water pump kit left me with a few concerns.
1. The first thing I noticed is that the new water pump kit has no seal above the impeller on the drive shaft nor a place to even put one in the housing. Found a few older post referring to it is a change in housing design but can it still pump water effectively with some water I would assume coming out the top of the housing?
2. There was no new key for the impeller with the new kit so I used the old one. After assembly there seemed to be a lot more play then I remember between the impeller and the shaft. By this I mean you can rotate the shaft back and forth 1/8th to a 1/4 turn or so before you feel the impeller moving with the shaft. Almost like the space for the key in the impeller is too big for the old key. Is this normal or should it be tight on the shaft?
3. Once I tightened down the four screws on the impeller housing it is not centered well on the drive shaft. The shaft comes up through way over to one side to the point where the plastic housing looks to be actually rubbing on the drive shaft. Is this just an issue of after market parts not being exact? I think the kit is a Mallory brand purchased a few months ago from Iboats.com
I did put the lower unit back on and ran it in a tank. Seemed to pump water strongly out the pee hole but all these things make me wonder if I should pull the lower unit, disassemble and check it over.
Thanks for the help
