Greetings all!
I just came into possession of a 1980 7.5 hp 'Rude. (A fellow at work was selling it, no one wanted to part with money for it, so he gave it away, first one to take it from the back of his truck keeps it...I was fastest)
Anyhow, the throttle is sticking, almost impossible to turn the tiller handle. The cable is moving free, so can it be the advance (I think that what it is) binding on the top of the motor? If so, can it be freed up without replacing a pile of parts? I don't want to purchase a manual yet, in case this puppy is toast. It has not run for 2 years, would be a great kicker.
Thank you.

Kevin, It should be a simple process to pop the cable clip/nut retainer and work the advance by hand. If it's sticking, pull the flywheel and have a look at what's binding. If it's the handle assembly, it too is easy to disassemble and lube as needed.

Okay... I am heading out to the garage in a few minutes to check it out.. I have not pulled a handle apart before, lets see how many pieces I can make it in... Any tips or tricks to the handle, before I trash it? :)
I will try the flywheel too.. much easier sitting on a stand..

Best to identify the problem area first , then start pulling things apart. Be sure you use a harmonic type puller for the flywheel, never pull the flywheel at the outer rim. Post back what you find. Good luck.

Re: 1980 7.5 HP

Greetings.
Just found out a couple of things about this motor. It is covered in oil, don't know why. Oil is everywhere, on the motor, inside the cowl, outside the cowl, on the leg, needs a good cleaning.
The advance is being hindered by the oil and grime that is built up. Also, the handle was SO full of dirt, sand, pine needles, etc that the cable could not move properly inside of it. The cable itself is free and easy to move. Going to take the flywheel off tonite (with a puller) :)
and bath the engine.... then put a little TCW3 into the cylinders....Put on the muffs and let my son pull until it either starts, or his arm gets sore. :D (the advantages of having kids!) If it does start, I will do the following.. Turn it off.... Clean it some more...remove the extension on the leg, I only need a short shaft... Maybe even buy a manual for the critter!! If it does not fire, then parts bound it is..
