Hello Gents-

I am working on a project for a friend of mine. He bought a jon boat rig with an '81 Evinrude 25, model # is E25TEC1M.

Has not run in years, pulled the lower to do a water pump and went to drain the oil, got a teaspoon of black goo out and some water. Disassembled the lower unit. It has been run without oil and the bearings, gears etc are junk.

Now, I started to look for a good used or reconditioned lower, and herin is the problem. Appearantly, '80 and '81 have a lower unit that appears from the outside to be a shear pin type, but in fact has a splined output shaft. The 35 of the same year has the thru prop hub exhaust, and the 25 went to that design in '82 and up I have been told.

Now since this middle leg etc has the shift rod with the split coupler and the plate on the side to access it, can the earlier pre '80 shear pin style lower be retrofitted?

I don't even want to think what buying each individual set of bearings plus the prop shaft and gears would run if I could find them, plus I need a bunch of welding done to reconstruct the broken cavitation plate.

Can any of you out there shed some light on this?
