Hello all!

I have this 1981 or 82 (not sure) 85 HP Chrysler sitting in my driveway nearly for 2 yr. Now, I?ve turned my attention to, (maybe I should sooner, but...)and I will try to explain what is with this motor and all your comments will be very appreciated......should I throw it to a yunkyard or is it worth it to get it back to life again....ok, here it goes....

When las time used, it has a power pack issue that just will fire the three cyl when warm....
Carbs rebuild, new, water impeller, has a leak for the exhaust port cover, due a corroded screws, and in a hole or 2, you have to refill and have it machined to put a new screws and gaskets...

Last trip were its very last, cause we have been turn around by a big wave, alluminum boat was lost and all we can recover was this motor...got me a new (to me) fiberglass and a 1980 115 johnson working like a champ!!

It was fill with tc-3, turned and started, but due the bad power pack misses a lot...obviuos..

Now, looking for what could be a major repair, or at least a major disasembly, and find out good or bad news, assuming that at least all gaskets and seals, power pack, and who knows what else could be needed....this particular motor worth the money and effort??

No issues on the lower unit...so maybe once opened I just tear it apart and sell the parts......

Thank you for all your opinions...very wellcome!!!

First thing!!!! Do a compression test.If the comp is off then sell it for parts.
There are a lot of stuff for these older motors still available.

Check the prices for non runners and working motors on e bay then you will know the score ... best time to sell is spring ...I buy in the low season do them up over the winter and sell in the spring ...

I agree with Jerry, compression test first, if all checks out I guess it depends on how bad you need two outboards. If your intentions are to fix it up to sell.... thats a personal judgement call. Yes you can part it out on ebay, but that takes alot of time. Folks sit on parts for sometimes a year before the right buyer comes around. If you want to fix it to run, your only looking at a tiny fraction of what it would cost to go buy a new OB. It is an undertaking to get at the broken bolts, but worth the effort and gaskets are cheap. I would fix it if the compression was good.

Thanks so much. I?ll do the compression test and post results...On the other hand...I only have used this motor couple of times myself, and it has already this issues of spark and leak, they are reliable enough also to try to restore? Also, are they well appreciated or just they are that kind of things that you will buy as a last resort? I mean, if I look for an OB, Any other people will consider other brand first?

Your gonna get a different brand? Buy American(Mexico is part of Amereica). The Mercury or Johnson have always been good.
Yes they are reliable enough to restore.A bit harder on gas but still a good runner.

Yep, I agree. I have run on Jhonson/Evinrude all my life, and this is the first chrysler to me, and here is not as common as the first one, altough yamaha is very strong here, I rather buy american, you?re 100 % right!! I?ll do a compression test and post again. Thanks!
