Here is my problem and what i have done so far..

I have a 1980 Evinrude 115 and it seems to run great at idol but at WOT It is surging up and down.. At first i thought it had to be a fuel problem so i replaced all my lines, bulb, line filter, connectors, fuel line from line in to pump and to carbs, rebuilt both carbs, replaced all gaskets, cleaned and went through gas tank, new fuel, cleaned out pick up screen in tank, took apart and checked out fuel pump, checked all lines for leaks.. When i run it at WOT i knew that when it was surging if i was to pump the bulb and it made it run better then it was most likely the pump but pumping doesnt help at all.. After all of that i made the assumption it cant be the fuel.. Sooo here is what i have discovered!! I think im on the track of figuring it out but need some advice from someone who actually knows these motors! I dont like close to a lake so its an all day trip to be able to check to see if it runs good between each thing i have done to it! I finally got the chance to take it to a lake for a long weekend so i could mess and tweek it while on the water! I finally got lucky and i found that if i take the spark plugs out and clean them with a piece or high grit sandpaper and run carb cleaner on them and in each cylinder then replace the plugs and re attach the wires, the engine runs PERFECT at WOT for about 4 hours or so depending on how hard i drive it! I obviously dont want to have to do this every 2-4 hours of boating.. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP!! This is my first boat and this process has been since last fall and its extremely frustrating!! Thank you for any advice!!

Spark plugs are consumable. It may be time for new ones.

Before you go out next, buy new plugs. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the plugs, you'll have the old ones as spares and they're not expensive and they also don't sell them in the middle of the lake.

Buy a spark tester ($5 at any auto store) and check your spark at a 3/8" gap on the old plugs before you go out. You want a snappy blue spark. For the sake of troubleshooting don't put the new plugs in yet. Once it starts to act up then check the spark again. If your troubles go away, cool. If not then you can start to troubleshoot more ignition components. They act differently when hot.

Since it's running well again after you mess around with the plugs I wonder if it's got nothing to do with the plugs themselves and you have a bad connection on a plug wire that gets corrected after you've pulled the wires and messed around with things? Just a thought.

Heres a good way to see if it's arching. Start it at night. You will notice if it is. post back results.

New plugs are good, if they have not been changed in a while. My experience with the crossflows is that you can run them for years on the same set of plugs. That includes an annual fogging resulting in no problems. Does not seem to matter whether the plugs are J-tips or the center fire plugs. Based on my humble experience, you should have many years of good boating in the future.

Replaced all 4 sparkplugs today and instead of it running good for a few hours it ran horribly all day

Dont know if anyone has suggested this yet, but fog the carbs and see if it makes a difference. Post back results.

You could have a fuel restriction. Did you check the fuel picup in the tank? Sometimes they come loose at the top and suck air. Also, they can get holes in them partway down the tube. When you are checking, make sure the ball valve in the anti-siphon valve moves freely. If it gets grit in it, it will stick and won't flow fuel properly. Check the fuel for water contamination.

Verify you install the correct plugs and gap them per your manual. Verify the plug wires are correct also and you DON"T have excessive lube/grease on the ends creating a arching instead of firing through the plug ...

Will it act up on the hose using muffs? If so use an inductive timing light and check each plug wire and see if you have spark on all of them, at least you will know if your ignition system is working properly. If the ignition system is good, you most likely have a fuel supply problem.
