Hello,

I recently purchased a 16' Mr. Pike boat with a 1980 evinrude 35 HP Outboard (E35ELCSM). The motor sat for awhile so I am tuning it up. Part of the tune up is changing the entire waterpump assembly.

I bought a waterpump kit and noticed upon disassembly of the old pump, that the new kit has 3 rubber O rings that appear to have not been used on the old pump. The parts diagram in my manual says one of these o rings go under the impeller cup, while the other two go on either side of an "extension", where the driveshaft goes through, which i do not have an "extension" on this motor. The old waterpump housing did not appear to have any o rings on either the cup side of the housing, or the top side of the housing where the drive shaft goes through. Should there be gaskets here? Is it possible these o rings are not needed on my particular model since they werent on the old one? I dont want to end up with extra parts:). Thanks for the help!!

Thanks Jasper, Is that extension tube something I should try to get my hands on or will it be good to go? Motor ran great before dissassembly and was spitting water like a champ. I just didnt want to take the chance that one of those prop fins got brittle while it was sitting, ya know. Thanks for the help!

I thought I heard F_R say it was to prevent water and/or exhaust from getting up in the crank area, but I could be wrong. I would try to locate a used one since I tend to error on the side of caution.

Re: 1980 Evinrude 35 HP Waterpump Question

Thanks again Jasper,

After going home and searching it again, I think I do have this spacer tube. It didnt drop down when I pulled the lower unit off and I was thinking it was a shorter tube that should be on top of the impeller housing. I think it is a long tube that stayed connected to the powerhead housing and just didnt drop out like the water pick up tube did. The drive shaft slides up through the center of this tube, and when I push the lower unit all the way up in place, I believe the tube will press against the top of the impeller housing. If this is the case, the tube is in there and I think everything is back together correctly.

Just to follow up.... Despite the extra O rings after assembly... Motor ran great over the weekend and spits water like a champ, even at idle...Thanks
