Ok, I thought I was getting good at fixing these older outboards, but now I need some help.

I have a 9.9hp 1980 Evinrude E10RSCE. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the float with the new style and it runs like a top! I put i on my 14' Seaking semi-V aluminum boat and it ran good but was just a bit shy on power. It would do 15 mph with one person, and struggle at 8.0 mph with two average people.

So, I purchased a 1986 15hp carb and rebuilt it, top to bottom, and made it "hospital clean". I even took out the welch plugs and got every bit of crud out of it. I resealed the plugs with nail polish to assure sealing. I re-assembled and tried it out today on the water. It would idle fine and run perfect at 15% throttle. When I would throttle it up it would really rev up and almost start to put the boat on plane, but then instantly die off completely (approximately 3-4 seconds). If I left the throttle open, it would turn off completely, and If i turned it back to idle, it would idle again without cutting off.

I tried it maybe 20+ times with the exact same results. It would idle just perfectly without skipping a beat, then when throttled it would rev up normal then die after 3-4 seconds.

I tried pump the fuel bulb to assure it was not a fuel pump problem and I did not notice any difference.

Thanks for any help, I'm stumped.

Welcome to iboats

Float level, restricted fuel line/filter. There is a chance the trouble could be ignition related as in a wire opening/grounding when armature plate is rotated

Well,

I properly set the float parallel to the carb gasket surface. I wouldn't think a restriction would be the problem as the motor runs great with the 9.9 carb (although it does use less fuel....), might have to go down this route.

Again with the 9.9 carb motor runs like a top, so I don't see the ignition being a source of my frustration.

Finally, one more clue.

When I disassembled the carb this evening I realized that the idle screw was only 1/2 turn from being seated.. The motor idled perfectly so I'm not sure.

Did you check the high speed orifice to make sure it was not plugged or restricted?

Yes, I pulled the orifice and it is not clogged or restricted. It is a #56 orifice.
