I have a 1980 Johnson J100TRLCS. When I was on lake yesterday, I started to go and it feels like it keeps popping into neutral. It did this a few times then ran all day fine. on wy way back to landing, it started doing it again. Any thoughts??

Take out the drain screw at the bottom of the lower unit and see if there is gear oil inside. If there is, disconnect the shift cable and see if it'll work when you shift it at the motor.

Possible the shift cable is out of adjustment at the engine end. If the shift cable does not permit full engagement of the clutch dog in the lower unit, it can slip out of gear when throttled up. If this is what is happening, it's a simple fix. Unfortunatley, the slipping causes extreme clutcht and gear face wear, so it's best to get the situation corrected quickly.
