I have a 1980 Johnson 150 (j150tlcsr). My base gasket was leaking, which I replaced this year. Now it's leaking again. I read somewhere, on this forum, that BRP has an upgraded gasket (metal backed). I am looking for that part number. I'm positive I installed it right, torque properly and all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chuck

Go to shop.evinrude.com, look up your motor and you should find the right part number.

You are justly concerned. There are two gaskets. One is just the paper one-which is not durable at all-probably the one you already installed. The other is the aluminum-coated one, which should last as long as you have that engine. Their factory exploded parts lists don't show the correct description/terminology that you are looking for and I've received the wrong gasket from Bombardier before.. I am not sure of the part number you need, but here is some information. 1978 powerhead base gasket 323214-still in production today. 1988 base gasket 333658, supercedes to 335503. 1990 base gasket 335503-still current. All of them are the same physical shape. One of these may be the one you are after. Rather than take a chance, call Bombardier's customer help number and ask them. 262-884-5993

323214 is the BRP number I bought. I will give them a call tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Chuck

Update: I called BRP today, rep said there was a "very old" service update to part number 335503. He also said this was still a paper gasket, but, was much thicker. I compared pictures of 335503 and 323214 and there is some differences in that the rear exhaust port is split as opposed to being open. I'm going to give it a try. Once again, Thanks, Chuck

I used my last aluminum-coated V6 base gasket last fall on my 79. Too bad I did not keep the part number. I'll bet it was the 333658. I've checked and seems no US- based dealers show any new stock on that part number anymore. One of my tech friends says he's used the superceded 335503 and says it works just as well as the older aluminum-coated ones.

Once again, thanks. As you know, this is not something that's fun to do. I've just repainted this old girl, and, it hurts to see oil/gas running down the sides and front of the mid-section. It is what it is, with your help, maybe this will straighten it out. Thanks, again, Chuck
