I just picked up this old 15 hp johnson. The guy told me it was stuck in forward gear. I was able to start it and when it fired I did see the prop full spinning. It was set in nuetral, so any ideas on why its not in nuetral?

ALL I can suggest is to check the shift rod when you are changing the gear shift lever, and see if the shift rod is moving with it. If not, it could be the shift rod linkage that came loose or broke somehow.

Likely one screw fell out of the shift rod connecter.----Take out 6 screws.----Drop the lower unit down and have a look in there.

Isn't there a cover he can remove that is on the side of the motor to take a look at the shift rod connector on this motor? If not, that connector must be farther down into the lower unit, correct?

No the coupler is right at the split between the 2 sections. If it is a longshaft it is at the top of the 5 " exhaust extension.

That is why I was asking a question in post #4, so I could learn something too. Thanks for your answer.
