Can anyone help ? I tried to remove the bottom leg to access the water pump by removing the 4 bolts and a centre bolt but the leg only dropped an inch or so. When I tried to wriggle the bottom leg off it appeared to still be conected by a small shaft running all the way up to the gear linkages and to me it appears that you have to remove the air cleaner and a few other parts to release that shaft. Does anyone know what I have described and can anyone help, please.

there is a connection, shift shaft, that has to be disconnected. do not turn the shaft, as it will change the length, and not shift properly. put 2 bolt back in to hold the lower.

The pin that holds the shift rod is at the top under the carburetors. Remove it from the port side.

thankyou ezeke.
It appears that the air cleaner housing is obstructing clear access to the pin am I correct that these should be removed to gain access to this pin and when it finally is disconnected will the shaft remove with the bottom of the leg?
