Question:

Never really paid a whole lot of attention to the exhaust relief ports on the previous Johnson OBs Ive had BUT this one I did over the weekend and have a question on:

How much water should be coming out of the exhaust relief ports when at idle and when under load (acceleratiing)?

Currently for me, when I am idling very little comes out of the exhaust relief ports but there is a mist and water is pumping out of the tell tale. When I put it in to forward or reverse it seems a good deal comes out. I am wondering if this is normal, and if so should there be a lot or some or different with every motor?

Just checking in on my motor and what I am seeing, appreciate the comments!

What you are seeing sounds like what I see on any of my larger motors. Not much water comes out the relief ports until the thermostats, or relief valves open. When your raise the rpm of the motor, the water pump will force water though the relief valves, even if the motor isn't warmed up yet. It is harder to see on my V4s, but on my 60hp I3 engine, water runs out of the relief ports like 2 garden hoses at WOT, but not at all when idling, and the telltale is always a strong stream.

You will get huge streams of water out of these ports when the boat is on plane. That's normal. As was mentioned, less at idle after the stats have opened.
