bought last week this 1980 Johnson 4.5HP (J5RLCS).
Skeletons started to jump out of it when I attempted to run it in a barrel...
Changed the head gasket, plugs, cleaned the carb, adjusted the float, and she fired up and ran great! Yay!
When I decided to service / check lower gear lube I found out that one of the two through-hole holding tabs was actually broken off and was held only by means of a bolt to the gearcase of the lower unit. Instead of the oil in the lower unit there was a lot of black pungent stinky water. The gears looked not damaged though.
So, .... I need a new gearcase head... Can anyone make any suggestion where I could get one please? It's absolete from most parts stores..... Bummer.
Please help? I like this motor!
