1980 merc 85 hp troubles

whats up guys i used to post on this forum alot but lost a computer, but here i am a year later. anyways, on the back of my glastron i have an 85 hp merc.... my problems include stalling, will not run over 1500 rpms, and sputtering. i know the motor sat for a little while and im thinking of rebuilding the carbs. compression is 120 in all 4 cylinders. i was just wondering if there is a common problem i am overlooking with these motors. like i said, i think its a carb rebuild, which i am going to do anyway, however if this does not suffice, id like to get some input as to if i am overlooking something. <br /><br />and oh yeah, spark is good, whole ignition system is new <br /><br />thanks guys

Sounds like a carb cleaning will fix the problem

Also check to make sure the idle air mixture screws on each carb are adjusted properly per manual specs - especially if the sputtering and stalling occur when you put it in gear in the water. There is also much info on the procedure to be found with the "Search" option if you don't have a manual. Good luck!

2 cycle, i just accquired the motor a couple of months ago, all the vitals were good so i bought it..... now like i said i think its just a carb rebuild the reeds are good, so is everything else on the motor

Hate to rain on your parade Jeff but, there wasn't an 85hp made in 1980. In 1980 there was an 80hp and a 90hp. From 1973 thru 1977 there was a 4 cylinder 85hp.

well, i never was clear on the year, i was told it was an "80 and i believed it
